The story of Billy Elliot is a story of development where we follow Billy an eleven-year-old boy, who desperately wants to be a ballet dancer. He is the son of a miner, his older brother Tony also works in the mine, Billy’s mother died two years prior, and the family also includes Nana, Billy and Tony’s grandmother.

By following his dream of becoming a ballet dancer, he breaks the social standard where it is unacceptable to dance ballet as a boy.

However, Billy manages to get his family to realize what he can do, and when the father sees his son dance, he discovers that Billy really has talent. The father realizes that his son can only succeed in his endeavours if he has the support of his family.

After a particularly sad Christmas, where getting food was a challenge on its own, and where the family had to burn the mother’s piano just to keep warm Billy's father breaks out of the strike and he starts working to make money for Billy's dream.
