The short story “My son the fanatic” written by Hanif Kureishi is about a native family living in England. In the story the father parvez and the son Ali stop talking to each other for some strange reason. The father is sad because he doesn't feel he has control over his son. Parvez thinks the worst of his son and suspects him of taking drugs. But what is really happening to Ali is that he has started to take the Koran very seriously. His father is very against it, and ends up punishing Ali by beating him.
The analysis
The story starts in media res, which means that it starts in the middle of a plot. The novel's theme is the different cultures. We have Parvez on one side who is Christian and is against the Islamic culture. He both eats pork and drinks alcohol, which is very wrong in Ali's eyes. On the other hand, there is Ali, who begins to reject Western values by throwing away his possessions and breaking up with his English girlfriend. Instead, he begins to adhere to the Islamic approach, believing it to be the right way to live.
The language in the story is very easy and simple to understand. There may be some words that may be difficult to understand. But the word choices in the story are very normal.
