Nathalie is the main character in the short story “Clean,” and her character is very complex and nuanced. In the beginning of the short story, we see Nathalie as this very dedicated dance instructor, teaching with enthusiasm and joy. She appears to be completely normal, with her hair tied up and wearing comfortable clothing.
However, the film gradually reveals her hidden drug problem. This is evident, when she lies about her whereabouts, and we see her talking to three men in a store. The camera is left outside, suggesting her involvement in illegal and activities. We also see her looking in the mirror, sniffing and touching her nose, which is making us question, what she has been doing. During this phase, her appearance changes, and she looks more tired with visible under-eye bags.
Later on, her drug addiction is getting worse, and so is her financial problems. The rent isn’t paid, and the electricity shuts off. We see Nathalie selling her belongings on the street, and even attempts to sell her TV, pretending she doesn’t need it anymore. She seems to start losing control over her life at this point, and the drugs take over.
As the film progresses, we see how Nathalie still tries to maintain a facade and lies about her financial situation, saying the rent money is in the mail. She is in a vulnerable state, but still gives money to a homeless man even though she is struggling financially herself. After witnessing the man on the train receiving money, Nathalie tries dressing like a homeless person in her desperate attempts to raise money for her addiction. Her appearance becomes disheveled, and this change in reflects her growing desperation.
