Often when I turn on my television I watch commercials from organizations like W.S.P.C.A or the W.W.F. They show horrible pictures of animals suffering from diseases, hunger or abuse. They show bears or monkeys in chains or elephants who are killed, just because of their tusks. Somehow there are people in this world who think they can take advantage of these animals, just because they are not able to defend themselves. They are voiceless. And unfortunately there are more people that don’t hesitate to buy the products from there abused animals. A paw from a monkey is used as an ashtray or the horn from a rhino is used as a drug in Chinese medicine. Either because it is prestigious or filled with superstition. Turists are thrilled by little chimps and are photographed with them, or they pay money to see a bear in chaines dance in the street. But they don’t realize that it is abuse and the more they pay, the more they support this kind of abuse.
Luckily there are organizations that work full time to speak out for these animals. They raise money to finance campaigns against animal cruelty and they need money to send out people to parts of the world where animal rights are none existing or ignored. They devote their life to be the voice of the voiceless. The animals are their clients and they cannot pay for their services. Therefore it is important that we support these organizations by sending them money or working as volunteers. But often we just turn to another channel because we don’t like to see the horrible pictures of suffering animals. We hate it but we don’t do anything about it. I admire the people that have chosen to be one of these voices and I hope that when I grow up, I will also find a cause in life where my voice is needed and where I will make a difference.
