Independence Day (Fourth of July) is a federal (a holiday accepted by the USA government) holiday. During the American Revolution and the separation from Britain they voted to approve solution of independence. After the voting of independence the congress turned its attention to The Declaration of Independence a statement that has been prepared by a committee.
This song is about a son’s (Bruce Springsteen) relationship with his father. They don’t really get along however later in the son’s life he realizes that his father has worked extremely hard to support the rest of the family. The son suddenly began to appreciate his father’s hard work. This has probably inspired the son to follow his own dreams and not go in the same, maybe blue-collar worker as his father.
In stanza one verse were the song starts with “Well papa go to bed now it’s getting late” is the same thing a father would usual say to his son on a normal day. The son thinks doesn’t like his father because of their similarities and therefore in stanza four verse three “It’s Independence Day all boys must run away”. All boys must run away exactly like the son does. In stanza five he sings “There’s a lot of people leaving town now, leaving their friends, their homes. At night they walk that dark and dusty highway down” so now they are all leaving the town behind, seeking their own dreams away from their roots. They are all following the dreams their father’s didn’t.
