Does Rocky’s underdog mentality correspond to the American ideals and values?
In this essay I will argue that Rocky portrays one of the most important American ideals, which is equality, and that with hard work, we have equal chances of succession. The movie portrays the journey of an underdog, a seemingly no-named boxer named Rocky Balboa, who rises from being a bottom rank, to challenging the reigning champion Apollo Creed. This essay argues that Rocky does indeed include one of the most important American ideals which is equality, and how he shows that with his determination and hard work. Rocky proves that people have equal opportunities for success if they put their heart into it.
Although the movie illustrates that hard work can get you to the top, critics may contend that Rocky's plot is too idealistic and too farfetched from reality. They could argue that Rocky's skyrocketing to the top of the boxing world, coupled with his seemingly flawless progression, lacks realism and authenticity. And that might be true, considering that an unknown athlete could improve so fast and rival the freaking master of boxing, undermines the realities of sports, where success often require more of you than just determination.
