The text is about a woman named Louise Mallard, whom just received the news about her husband’s death. It was her sister who brought her the terrible news. At first Mrs. Mallard had burst out in tears, while her sister was holding her, as well trying to comfort her. Her husband’s friend Richard was there too and he was the one that received the news about Mr. Mallard’s death. It was in a railroad accident, and the list of the victims had been revealed at the newspaper office and the husband name appeared in the top of the list.
Louise stopped weeping and went alone into her room. She needed some time alone to think through the upcoming future, as a widow. At first she seemed choked about it, but then suddenly she felt a strange or unknown feeling. She could not explain it at first, but it was not a bad feeling. She did not feel so sad at all anymore and the terror in her eyes had disappeared. The words “free, free, freel” came through her lips repeatedly and she now realized that she had her whole life in front of her. She felt relieved. She had the rest of her life to think about no one but herself. It was not because she did not love him, she did sometimes – at least.
