'Thebedi and Paulus' story summary

Thebedi and Paulus is a story about a black girl and a white boy being friends during apartheid.

They were very good friends when they were children but Paulus went to a boarding school and they lost contact. However, when he came back from the boarding school the first time, he gave Thebedi a present, and Thebedi gave him bracelet before he went back to the school.

The boarding school he went to had a ‘sister school’. He flirted with the girls from that school.

One day at a wedding Paulus met a girl, and they had sex in a locked storeroom.

When he went home he bought Thebedi a present again.

Then it was holiday and they met each other, it wasn’t planned at all. They talked a lot about Paulus school.

One hot summer day, Thebedi was sweaty, so she went into the water. Paulus had swum with many girls, but he felt something different with Thebedi. They had sex right after she came up from the water.

Thebedi’s parents arranged a marriage when she was 18 years old with a guy named Njabulo, but she didn’t tell Paulus that. To make things worse she was also pregnant. Thebedi and Njabulo got married, and two months later they got a daughter. Thebedi and Njabulo were both black, so there was something wrong, the baby was too light.
