Slumdog Millionaire is a British movie from 2009. It is based on a novel from 2005. It is directed by a Britain movie director and an Indian movie director, so it gets a mix between Hollywood and Bollywood (the Indian version of Hollywood). The movie takes place in India, mostly in Mumbai, and is about a former street boy, who is called Jamal Malik. Jamal is a contestant in the Indian version of “Who wants to be a millionaire?”. He is only one answer away from winning the biggest price. But before he can come back to the show and answer the last question, he has to explain to the police. They think that he has cheated, and they don’t believe that a boy from the streets can be so smart and answer all the answers correctly. In the movie you see Jamal’s life in flashbacks. Every one of the questions can be related to something that he has experienced in his tough life as a “slumdog” together with his brother Salim and his friend, later girlfriend, Latika – together they are the three musketeers. So the movie switches between the show and flashbacks from different periods in Jamal’s life. In the beginning of the movie, you don’t know what is happening. They introduce us in a very simple way, so we can figure out what is going on. The editing and the fast cutting catch our interest and want us to keep seeing the movie. The movie asks us a question in the beginning. “How did he do it?” (Win the grand prize). We get the opportunities a) He cheated, b) He was lucky, c) He is a genius and d) It was destiny. It makes people who watch the movie think about the question, and it makes people want to see the movie until it’s done. They want to get an answer to the question. We get the answer “destiny” in the end of the movieJamal Malik as 18 years is played by Dev Patel, and as a child, Ayush Khedekar and Tanay Chheda plays the role as Jamal when he is an older child. Salim Malik as old is played by Madhur Mittal and as a child by Azharrudin Ismail and as adolescent by Ashutosh Lobo. Latika’s character when she is old is played by Freida Pinto. As child it is Rubina Ali and as adolescent it is Tanvi Lonkar.Jamal is the main character. He is a very kind boy, and unlike his brother he can’t and won’t hurt people. In the beginning he loves his brother, but when Salim betrays him, it isn’t hard for Jamal to stop loving him. He had a very tough childhood. His mother was killed by anti-Muslims, and he had to grow up with Jamal, who didn’t always want the best things for Jamal. Jamal is very different compared to Salim. When they meet Latika the first time, Jamal is the one to invite her inside where they are sleeping. He becomes good friends with Latika, and later on he falls in love with her. Jamal often obey other people. That’s because he’s use to gets orders from his brother. When he gets older, he works as a tea server in a call center, where people also said what he had to do. The themes are poverty and wealth, but the main theme is destiny. It is destiny that he wins the money, and it is destiny that he is meats Latika again after all the years. In older days white people had the idea that they were the “masters”, and they decided over the third countries, for example India. The host in the television show “Who wants to be a millionaire?” is not as “Indian” as Jamal Malik is. He is rich and kind of white, and not like a typical Indian from the streets. They are also speaking English in the show and the show is from America. The host is mean to Jamal and is very impertinent. For example he makes jokes about Jamal’s job, and his background. Again, that’s just like the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized in literature, where the colonizer, the Western countries, used the colonized, for example Indian people, as their slaves.
