Jamal is in the contest ‘who wants to be a millionaire.’ The movie takes action while the 18-year old boy answers the 14th question and is 1 question from 20 million rubies. But the snag about this boy is that he was raised in the slum in India. He had a very poor childhood, and had never gone to school. The show breaks for the night just before the last question, and Jamal is arrested by the police. They claims that he is cheating in the game, but to proof that all his knowledge is learned from his life experience, he is telling the police the story. Jamal tells about the adventures he had with his brother Salim, and about his lost love, Latika. Every experience leads to an answer of a question in this impossible quiz.
Jamal has been gone through a lot of things. He is orphaned and so was Latika. He has no education, and is serving tea in a call center. He had a struggle surviving the hard street life.
As child, the brothers lost their mother. The three children were taken by a gangster, and were trained to become beggars. They tried to escape from this slavery by jumping onto a moving train, but Latika was left behind. For years, the brothers was making a living by jumping trains, pocket stealing, selling goods, washing dishes, pretending to be tour guides in Taj Mahal, and then stealing their shoes.
