1) Ellie has a very close and good relationship with her father. She grew up with no mother figure in the house, so it had always just been her and her father. Her father also teaches her a lot of stuff about space and universes.
2) Ellie was as a child very interested in space, all the things she has learned about space comes from her father. When Ellie grew older the interest for other universes didn’t go away, even after her dad died.
3) Ellie works with space, and her job is to find other intelligent life out there. Many don’t believe in Ellie but that does not bother her, she thinks there must be something/someone else out there.
4) SETI means Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, and it is an institute made by Carl Sagan and Frank Drake. In the film, Ellie works with a bunch of other people, but Ellie is the only one who is looking for living life, she said it herself she is looking for small green men.
5) We first meet Palmer Joss when he makes contact with Ellie at a bar/restaurant. We later find out that he is a priest, but also not a priest. He says that Ellie can call him the man of the cloth. His perspective of the world is quite unusual I think, he is a very spiritual man but he also in science and facts. he says that life would not be worth living if there is not a god.
