Amish: Liv, tro og samfund

The Amish people is a group that refuses to use any modern electronics. They believe in the bible and base their life around it. They speak Pennsylvanian Dutch and normal English. The Amish originated from Europe, but now there are only Amish living in America and Canada. When they are about 16 years old they are given the choice, if they want to continue the Amish way or start being a normal American. This is one of the most important choices an Amish must take. It is important that the person is not under pressure from any side. The Amish life is all about farming and family. It is important that you can get a big farm and some horses. But in the years the Amish population has grown so big that there’s basically not enough space. They have solved most of the problem by sharing farms and grounds. There are 3 known Amish groups: The old Amish order they are the one who follows traditions most and is nearly impossible to get in the group. Then there is the beachy and the new order. These orders do not forbid electronics and are more open to modern things. But they are still very orthodox Christians and really hard to get accepted in to. As far as transportation goes Traveling by horse and buggy is the prominent mode of transportation. However traveling by train and bus these are unlike a car in that they cannot be used for personal status. When it comes to discipline The Amish community governs itself strictly. Baptised members are morally committed to church rules. Erring members may be shunned until there is repentance, forgiveness and restoration to full fellowship. The Amish Members of the community help each other, and the whole community will work together to help a member in trouble. They do not accept state benefits or use insurance, but rely on community support instead.
